Elena Ferrante

Elena Ferrante is a mystery. This person is an Italian writer whose books are very popular in Italy and Europe, and who now is gaining popularity in the United States. Some are not sure if this person is a woman, or really a man who wants to go unidentified. Most believe the author is a woman.

I have read two books by Ms. Ferrante: Troubling Love and My Brilliant Friend. My Brilliant Friend is the first of the “Neapolitan novels” about the lives of two friends. In My Brilliant Friend, readers are introduced to Lila and Elena. They grow up in a poor section of Naples. Lila is the wild, crazy, but extremely smart one, while Elena is the follower, the one who does as she is expected. It was so engrossing to read how their circumstances influence their lives, and the choices each makes. Whoever Ms. Ferrante might be, this person is an extremely talented writer who can weave many tales together to form a beautiful work of art. I have to read the rest of the Neapolitan before I read the rest of her books.

Troubling Love was a disturbing book that I could not put down. This book is about mother/daughter relationships and family secrets.

Thank you for introducing me to this author. Sounds like something I would enjoy reading, and that first cover above sure intrigues.
